Germany 2011/2012 UN Security Council Member
Since 1 January 2011 Germany has been a member of the United Nations Security Council. This means that for the next two years Germany will shoulder a special responsibility for international affairs, according to Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. Following previous terms in 1977/78, 1987/88, 1995/96 and 2003/04, Germany is now serving its fifth term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

On 23 September, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sought full United Nations membership for a Palestinian state. In response, the Israeli Prime Minster emphasised that there must first be a solution for peace, and only then could there be a Palestinian state. German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle stated in New York that he was “concerned about the unyielding positions that were presented today”.
