Indian students excel at German universities

Jan 17, 2012

Germany is now an even more attractive study destination for Indians. The number of Indian students in Germany has increased to 5,038 in the academic year 2010-11, which is an increase of approximately 24 percent in one year. Indians have also excelled in bagging the annual German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Prize, awarded to applaud the outstanding achievements of foreign students at German universities.

In 2011, there were a total of 10 awardees from India. The students are enrolled in a wide range of study disciplines like computer science, management, German studies and automative systems, amongst others.

The DAAD prize is awarded to foreign students who complete their studies in Germany and have distinguished themselves through their special academic performance and remarkable social and intercultural commitment. The initiatives taken by the students in extra-curricular activities, working in intercultural teams, language competence and involvement in on- & off-campus projects are few important parameters for student evaluation.

The recipients are largely Masters programme students, but talented young doctoral candidates are also honoured. Prize winners are not only an example for their fellow students from around the world, but are also future partners for Germany in the fields of economy, politics and science.

Apart from excelling in German universities, there are many other compelling reasons for Germany gaining popularity as a study destination in India.

Study in English language

More and more programmes are being offered in English due to the increased demand to study in Germany. Being the gateway to Europe and its largest economy, Germany serves as the perfect destination for students interested in international careers.

Unlimited career opportunities

Recently, the German government adopted a bill that will introduce the EU 'Blue Card' as a new work and residence permit. Some of the provisions of the bill include better prospects of gaining residency for foreign graduates of German universities, lower income requirements to enable highly qualified specialists to acquire a permanent settlement permit, and a simpler temporary residence permit procedure for researchers. The new law proposes to grant foreign graduates of German universities unrestricted access to the job market in their search for a post that fits their qualifications.

Modern facilities and practical exposure

Germany’s higher education institutes enjoy an excellent reputation, with state-of-the-art equipment and labs, and the very best conditions for successful studies. Academic institutions and business houses pool their resources, making Germany a leading country in fields such as environment and nanotechnology.

Scholarships and no or minimum tuition fee

Tuition fees at German universities are highly subsidised and are the same as for German students. German universities also offer a number of scholarships for students with excellent academic records. About 15 – 20 percent of Indian students in Germany receive funding every year. In 2010, DAAD granted 1,300 scholarships to Indians studying in Germany. The DAAD scholarship database (www.funding-guide.de) contains extensive information and a variety of possibilities. The database not only lists all the scholarships offered by the DAAD, but also diverse programmes offered by a wide variety of institutions.

Be a part of the global landscape

Germany tops the list of the most internationalised countries in the higher education arena. Germany bagged the first position beating Australia, the United Kingdom and China, as reported by a recent British Council survey. Germany scores high on accessibility, support for foreign students, quality and reputation of degrees worldwide, and the extent of mobility to study and do research abroad.

Management students at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management

A delegation of 18 German universities, research and funding institutions will tour across India and present their master and PhD Opportunities in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai in February 2012. The Expo will present an excellent platform for a one-to-one exchange with representatives of German universities and research organisations. It is a great opportunity to ask anything a student or young researcher wants to know, in order to prepare a study or research stay in Germany!
