Goethe Institutes & Goethe Centres (MMBs) in India
The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institution of the Federal Republic of Germany with branches all over the world. In India, the Goethe Institutes are called Max Mueller Bhavans (MMB) – in honour of Max Müller (1823-1900), a scholar of Sanskrit and Indian religions.
These cultural institutions promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster bilateral cultural cooperation. One of the important task of Goethe Institutes is to convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany's cultural, social and political life.
There are six Max Mueller Bhavans (Goethe Institutes) in India, the one in New Delhi functions as the head office, the other five i.e. Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune function as branch offices. There are also five Goethe Centres in India, which are in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Trivandrum.
The MMB in New Delhi also houses the branch office of the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University.
