Indo-German Economic Cooperation at a glance

Indo-German development cooperation is a solid pillar of the Indo-German strategic partnership. Both countries are equally committed to achieving the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs); further, they want to tackle global challenges in the fields of climate and environment.

Energy cooperation

The Indo-German Energy Forum – a yearly bilateral dialogue on energy at secretary level – was set up in 2006. Several subgroups have been set up under the Forum to cover more specific issues and projects,  which also involve the business community. A support office in New Delhi assists Forum events. An extensive bilateral development cooperation complements this political dialogue – with a strong focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Environment & Climate Change

Germany and India agreed on cooperation in the field of environment protection in 1998. This has since expanded to include management of waste, water, and renewable energies. Development cooperation in the sector is specifically focused on natural resource management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity, urban and industrial environment protection and innovative green technologies. A yearly bilateral event in New Delhi on carbon credits supplements this cooperation.

Sustainable Development

Germany supports India’s reform policies geared towards inclusive, regionally and socially balanced growth. As concrete steps in this direction, Germany, in collaboration with Indian partner institutions, is actively supporting development and strengthening of financial systems in rural areas, microfinance institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises, social policy instruments especially for the unorganised sector and social protection of the poor.

Public Private Partnership and Global Engagement

Development cooperation also includes partnerships with the private sector under the programme. The programme combines the respective strengths of public and private partners. As of 1 January 2012, Engagement Global has united under one roof German development initiatives and programmes that work towards an equitable world community.
