Overview of Bilateral Cooperation

Indo-German development cooperation is well integrated in the foreign policy framework of relations between India and Germany. Both countries are equally committed to achieving the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs); further, they want to tackle global challenges in the fields of climate and environment.

Energy cooperation

Energy

The Indo-German Energy Forum – a bilateral dialogue on energy – was set up in 2006. Several subgroups have been set up under the Forum to cover more specific issues and projects, which also involve the business community. An extensive bilateral development cooperation complements this political dialogue – energy was chosen in 2008 by the two governments as one of the three core areas for cooperation, with increasing focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Environment & Climate Change

Germany and India agreed on cooperation in the field of environment protection in 1998. This has since expanded to include management of waste, water, and renewable energies. Development cooperation in the sector is specifically focused on natural resource management and urban environment protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and innovative green technologies.

Sustainable Development

Germany supports India’s reform policies geared towards inclusive, regionally and socially balanced growth. As concrete steps in this direction Germany, in collaboration with Indian partner institutions, is actively supporting development and strengthening of financial systems in rural areas, social policy instruments especially for the unorganised sector, and promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as microfinance institutions.

Small Scale Projects in the field of Development Cooperation

Small projects

The German Diplomatic and Consular Missions in India operate a programme which enables them to provide direct financial assistance to Indian NGOs and religious institutions for the implementation of small-scale projects for the benefit of disadvantaged groups of society. This programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AA) and implemented through German Diplomatic and Consular Missions abroad.
