Indo-German development cooperation is well integrated in the foreign policy framework of relations between India and Germany. The Indo-German Energy Forum – a bilateral dialogue on energy – was set up in 2006. Several subgroups have been set up under the Forum to cover more specific issues and projects, which also involve the business community. An extensive bilateral development cooperation complements this political dialogue – energy was chosen in 2008 by the two governments as one of the three core areas for cooperation, with increasing focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Germany and India agreed on cooperation in the field of environment protection in 1998. This has since expanded to include management of waste, water, and renewable energies. Development cooperation in the sector is specifically focused on natural resource management and urban environment protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and innovative green technologies.

Germany supports India’s reform policies geared towards inclusive, regionally and socially balanced growth. As concrete steps in this direction Germany, in collaboration with Indian partner institutions, is actively supporting development and strengthening of financial systems in rural areas, social policy instruments especially for the unorganised sector, and promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as microfinance institutions.
