Germany and India enhance their ties in the field of education and research

(© dpa) Education and research turned out to be one of the central elements of Indo-German cooperation during the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to India on 31st May 2011. Out of the 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the visit of Chancellor Merkel, 9 MoUs were in the field of education and research.

These MoUs were signed between:

  1. German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and India's Ministry of Labour and Employment to cooperate and reform the skill development system in India.

  2. Germany's iMOVE and India's National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to promote vocational training in India.


  3. Handwerkskammer Rhein-Main (Rhine-Main Chamber of Skilled Crafts) and ILF&S Cluster Development Initiative Limited. ILFS is likely to set up 100 Multi Skilled schools along the planned Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor that would provide skills training for local industries and self employment based on the demand of that particular region.

  4. Department of Science and Technology (DST) & Leibniz Association for organizing Indo-German Symposiums on Frontiers of Science & Technology.

  5. University of Stuttgart, Germany and Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, India to enhance academic and research collaboration in form of exchange of students & faculty and to sponsor cooperative seminars, workshops etc.

  6. University of Hyderabad and the Institute of Materials Physics of the University of Münster to enhance cooperation with each other.

  7. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Helmholtz Association (HGF), Germany for active translational efforts in biomedical research particularly in infectious diseases with long term capacity building for researchers and scientists.


  8. Dresden University of Applied Sciences and National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee to establish an Indo-German Competence Centre for Riverbank Filtration (IFCCRBF).

  9. DESY, a Research Center of the Helmholtz Association and SINP (Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata) on the usage of PETRA III, the most brilliant storage-ring-based X-ray radiation source in the world.

Education & Research MoUs, 2011
