The task of providing information about institutions of higher education as well as research institutes in Germany is being done by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which was established in 1960 and promotes academic exchange between Germany and India.
The DAAD provides information about education in Germany, grants scholarships to Indian students, invites Indian scientists to Germany, and supports mutual research projects. In 2010, over 800 Indian and 400 German academicians and scientists received financial assistance for their research from the DAAD.
The past decade has witnessed an enormous increase of over 400 percent in the number of Indian students at German universities, so that it now stands at over 4,000. Germany has established itself as a very popular research destination for Indian scientists and researchers, with over 1,000 of them currently pursuing world-class research at German universities and research centres.
Apart from the New Delhi branch office, the DAAD has a network of Information Centres and Information Points at Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune.
