Europeana 1914-1918

100 years after the outbreak of the First World War, "Europeana 1914 - 1918" presents a visual history of the war. The new online resource is a joint European project, supported by institutions as well as individuals in 20 countries. The virtual library provides access in several languages to books, maps, films, museum exhibits and archive material – a total of about 90,000 personal documents and mementos.

Over the course of three years, the international joint research project "1914-1918-online. International Encyclopedia of the First World War” is developing an English-language virtual reference work on the First World War. The online encyclopedia is the result of an international collaborative project to make available a multi-perspective, public-access knowledge base on the First World War.

But could European diplomacy have altered the course of those terrible events? A question that is still asked today. And it was asked again at the panel discussion “1914: The Failure of Diplomacy“ held at the German Foreign Office on the 28th of January 2014.
