The Federal Government
In October 2009 the Bundestag re-elected Dr. Angela Merkel to the office of Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Angela Merkel is the eighth German Federal Chancellor and the first woman to head a Federal Government.
The Chancellor and the Federal Ministers form the Federal Cabinet. The Chancellor chairs the Federal Cabinet.
While the Chancellor holds the power to issue directives, the ministers have departmental powers, meaning that they independently run their respective ministries in the framework of those directives.
