Vice-President of the Bundestag Claudia Roth in Bhutan

The Vice-President of the Bundestag (German Parliament) Claudia Roth paid a visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan from 6th to 9th April. Her talks with members of parliament, representatives of the government as well as of civil society focused on the democratic path, which the 4th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck set the country on, as well as on the development of Bhutan in the context of Gross National Happiness strategy. Further points of discussion were the challenges of climate change in the Himalayas, sustainable development and economic growth as well as fostering exchange and cooperation with Germany.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck granted an audience to the Vice-President of the Bundestag. In the capital Thimphu, Claudia Roth also held talks with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, with the Deputy Speaker of the National Council, Chimi Dorji, the Deputy Chairman of the National Council, Tshering Dorji, the Secretary of the Gross National Happiness Commission, Thinlay Namgyel as well as with the President of the Centre for Bhutan Studies and Gross National Happiness Research, Karma Ura.
In her discussions with opposition leader Dr. Pema Gyamtsho of the Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party as well as with several NGOs Roth learned about opportunities and challenges in the democratic and social development of Bhutan, especially in the context of the upcoming elections in 2018.
Through her meetings with representatives from the cultural field and the monastic body, Claudia Roth received valuable insights into the deep rooted traditions and Buddhism in Bhutan on the one hand and the progressive opening-up of the country on the other hand.
On the last day of her visit, the Vice-President of the Bundestag attended the Paro Festival.
