Inauguration of Small Scale Project "Edible School Gardens" in Uttar Pradesh

On Friday, February 17th, a member of the German Embassy in New Delhi inaugurated the small scale project “edible school gardens” which was implemented by the Delhi based NGO “The Child Trust” (TCT).

A private and a governmental school in Raipura Village, Firozabad District, UP, were equipped with plants and gardening tools to start their own gardens in the school yards. The fruit and vegetables which are harvested are used to cook mid-day meals and students can take them home for their own consumption. The students have planted and are now taking care of the gardens and have additional lessons about healthy and nutritious food. They monitor the growth of fruit trees which they planted on their own with photos and small reports.

The inauguration was attended by members of TCT as well as by government officials of Firozabad District. The students performed songs and dances and held short presentations on what they had learned about the nutritious value and the preparation of certain fruits and vegetables.

The German Embassy had funded the project with 5600 Euros. More information about the application for and guidelines on small scale projects can be found under:
