Student Visa

Application procedure:

Applicants should apply for the visa in person at least 3 months prior to departure. Please note the visa processing may take 6 - 12 weeks as all the applications have to be referred to the local German authorities. Simultaneous applications for short term visas and long term visas cannot be entertained.

Please Note short term visas cannot be converted into residence permits after arrival in Germany.

Application Form for a Student Visa

Please find below the link to the online Application Form for a Student Visa. Applicants are requested to fill in the required details. The form then needs to be saved and printed and finally signed by the applicant to be submitted along with the other required documents.

Passport and Photograph

Passport

The Visa section of the German Consulate General can only issue visas to applicants holding a valid passport. The applicants have to present a passport fulfilling the following criteria:

- The passport should have been issued (and not extended) in the last 10 years.

- The passport should contain atleast 2 blank pages.

-The passport should have a minimum validity of 12 months beyond the date of return from the Schengen territory.

Please note: Passports containing illegible data will not be accepted.

Photograph

The photograph must be 35 mm X 45 mm in size with the face covering about three quarters of the area of the photograph. The background of the photograph should be light in color.

Visa Fees

The visa fees are subject to change.

Applicants have to pay the visa fees by demand draft. The Demand Draft must be in the name of the "Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mumbai", payable in Mumbai and must not be older than two months. 

Please Note the visa fees will not be reimbursed in case of the visa being rejected. Visa fees will be waived off for spouses and children of EU-Nationals.

Letter of Admission

Applicants are required to submit the original and an A4 sized copy of the letter of admission from the German University.

Marksheets and Certificates

Applicants are requested to submit the original and A4 sized copies of their marksheets and degree certificates. Only course completion certificates are not sufficient.

Proof of English Language proficiency

Applicants are required to submit the original and A4 sized copies of proof of English language proficiency such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Proof of German Language proficiency

Applicants are required to submit the original and A4 sized copies of proof of German language proficiency even if the medium of instruction at the German university is only partly German.

Proof of sufficient knowledge of German language through a certificate which was recently issued by the
Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhavan).

The Consulate recognizes certificates from all German language schools which follow the standardized
language test of the “Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE)”. These language schools
have to ensure that their language tests are undertaken by the schools' own teachers and that they employ
native German teachers. Please note that at present in India only the Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhavan)
fulfils these ALTE-requirements.

Proof of Financial Means

Applicants are required to submit the following documents to prove that they can bear their financial expenses during the entire period of study in Germany:

- Confirmation of Scholarship or stipend received by them

- Formal letter of sponsorship from a sponsor living in Germany ("Verpflichtungserklärung" according to Article 68 of the German Residence Act)

- A students blocked account ("Sperrkonto") in Germany in the name of the applicant showing a minimum balance of Euro 8.040,- and the
remark that the account holder can dispose of a monthly amount of EURO 670,- (please note if your balance is not fulfilling the mentioned conditions your application can not be processed)
For information with regard to the procedure of opening a blocked account in Germany please contact a bank in Germany or an international bank of your choice.
It is highly recommended that the money transfer is made by international bank transfer. Do not send bank drafts, moneyorders or cheques to open the blocked-account.

-Confirmation of an annually renewable bank guarantee from a bank in Germany to the tune of € 8.040-.

Proof that study fees have been paid, if applicable. In case the fees are not paid or due yet, proof has to be provided that the necessary amount will be at the applicant's disposal in due course of time.

Declaration of Authenticity

A Declaration of Authenticity is required to be signed by the applicant as a guarantee that all information and documents provided by the applicant are genuine. Knowingly providing false information may result in the applicant being denied a visa or being deported from Germany, should a visa already have been issued.

Please Note: Signature attestation for students, who intend to open a BLOCKED ACCOUNT with a bank in Germany, will be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Students are requested to submit their documents between 09.00 to 11.30 a.m. The attested documents can be picked up the same day between 02.30 to 03.00 p.m.
