Federal Minister of Defence visits Mumbai, May 27-28, 2015

Federal Minister of Defence Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by a high ranking delegation, visited Mumbai from May 27-28, 2015. At a reception at the German Residence, the Minister had the opportunity to meet key representatives of Indian and German businesses. During her visit, Dr. von der Leyen also visited the Headquarters of the Western Naval Command where she got a briefing about the various tasks of the Navy and discussed issues of maritime security including anti-piracy operations. She also had the opportunity to visit the youngest Indian Navy ship, INS Kolkata, built at Mumbai’s Mazagon Docks and commissioned in 2014. Minister von der Leyen later had an expert talk on “Global Strategic Trends: 'Security and Business: Seeding Prosperity Anew'”, together with S. Misra (Head HR, Aditya Birla Group) and General (rtd.) K. Surendranath. The meeting was organized by Think Tank "Gateway House" and was followed by a Q & A session.

The Mumbai visit of the Defence Minister was preceeded by a visit to New Delhi including meetings with Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Parrikar. She travels further to Singapore to attend the Shangri-La Security Conference. Dr. Ursula von der Leyen is the first woman to hold the office of a German Federal Minister of Defence. She has held several important cabinet portfolios over the past 10 years.
