India has a long-standing shipbuilding tradition and has once again become an international player in the maritime industry over the last few decades. The port city of Mumbai is undeniably a major contributor to this development. Around 90 percent of India's overseas trade in terms of volume and 70 percent by value are sea-borne. Over the last decade, volumes of traffic handled through the ports has grown almost threefold.
The association between Mumbai and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the second largest port in Europe and Germany's "Gateway to the World" is steadily intensifying. To foster this association further, Dr. Manfred Schubert, Deputy Director-General for Industrial Policy from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and Mr. Wolfgang Schmidt, State Secretary in the Senate Chancellory of the City-State of Hamburg visited Mumbai from April 3-6, 2013. Accompanying them were Mr. Bernd Aufderheide, President & CEO and Mr. Peter Bergleiter, Business Unit Director of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH, Germany.
During their 3-day visit, the delegation inaugurated together with Mr. Milind Deora, Minister of State for Shipping and IT, "SMM India", the International Maritime Trade Fair, which was held in Mumbai from April 4-6, 2013 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre.
