General Visa information

Depending on the purpose and duration of your stay in Germany you can either apply for a short-term "Schengen visa" or for a long-term "German national visa" for stays over 90 days. The German Missions in India have started outsourcing the handling of SCHENGEN visa applications to VFS Global. Now, every client will have the option to submit his/her visa application at a nearby Visa Application Centre.

A Schengen visa entitles the holder to an accumulated stay of up to 90 days within a period of six months and is valid for Germany, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland (Schengen Area).

Important notice:

The German Missions in India will shortly outsource the handling of Schengen visa applications to VFS Global.

Now, every client will have the option to submit his/her visa application at a nearby Visa Application Centre.

- status of the process anytime retrievable online

- you are saving on time and travelling expense

The use of the Visa Application Centres is not mandatory; the resulting additional costs are to be paid directly to VFS Global

Alternatively, you may also submit your visa application, after scheduling an apppointment, to the German Mission of your local jurisdiction.

Please do not send any invitation letters to the Consulate General, but to the applicant him-/herself. Please also be informed that the original of the invitation has to be given. Faxed or e-mailed invitations from individuals and /or companies inviting Indian nationals to visit Germany and /or Schengen Area will not be accepted.

German national visa

If you would like to move to Germany, you may apply for a German national visa.

Please note that the visa process might take 8 to 12 weeks. Any enquiries in writing or by telephone for the status of an application within a period of 12 weeks from date of application cannot be answered.

The applicant will be informed of the approval only by phone. Therefore, please make sure to give a clear, legible and valid phone number in your visa application.

Information on German knowledge requirement

Since Germany has amended its law relating to foreigners in 2007, visa applicants are required to present evidence of basic knowledge of the German language in the event of family reunion of spouses.

Kindly note that due to a high volume of email and telephonic queries, the Consulate will not respond to inquiries that are already clarified on the website. Please restrain from calling the Consulate in a visa related matter but use the contact form . Please understand that the Consulate will not answer status enquiries of visa applications.

Please be informed that due to security reasons visa applicants can only be permitted to enter the premises of the Consulate General a maximum of  20 minutes prior to the scheduled time of appointment.
