The German Consul General in Chennai, Mr. Achim Fabig, conferred the prestigious “Bundesverdienstkreuz” – the Cross of the Order of Merit - on Professor Mehta of the University of Hyderabad on Sunday, 21 February, in a ceremony at the ITC Kakatiya, Hyderabad.
Prof. Mehta is an eminent and globally renowned chemist who has contributed largely to the field of organic chemistry. He has been working in leading positions at various academic institutions and universities, .i.e. the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, the University of Hyderabad, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and served in important missions such as the GoI Scientific Commission on the Bhopal Gas Leakage, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or the India-European Union (EU) Round table of Eminent Persons.
Prof. Mehta was the first Indian scientist to receive the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for his work on organic chemistry in 1995. He received the Award again in 2000 for his work at the University of Heidelberg, and in 2007 for his work at the Freie University in Berlin. Prof. Mehta served as the President of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellow Alumni Network in Bangalore and joined the high-ranking Indo-German Advisory Group in 2012, which directly serves both the Prime Minister of India and the German Chancellor. In this function, he has worked elaborately and compassionately for the advancement of Indo-German cooperation in the fields of science and research to the advantage of both India and Germany.
