IGCC Foot Ball Tournament 2012 Sunday 22nd January 2012.
Four simultaneous fields came alive at 9.00 a.m. on Sunday 22nd January at the Village of the Golden Palms Resort on Tumkur road with the sound of 128 football players and about 300 spectators. The 5th IGCC Foot Ball tournament 2012 was about to begin.
The IGCC Football tournament is an annual event held during the latter held on a Sunday during the latter half of the month. The organiser of this event is the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Bangalore supported by the German Business Group, The German Consulate Bangalore and sponsored by Prion Group, Germany. This IGCC Football Tournament is held under the banner of the “Germany India year – Infinite Opportunities” celebrating 60 years of Indo-German relations, which will promote and enhance the Indo-German cultural, social and economic relationship.
It’s a 4-a-side tournament between teams from German firms in Bangalore. Each team consist of 7 players and a Goal keeper, on a field size of 13m x 26 m the goal size 2m x3m. The proceeds from this event will support the Shanti Bhavan, the exceptional school for the socially neglected and most vulnerable children.
The tournament first started in the year 2007 with a modest participation of 5 teams. It has grown from strength to strength and this year 16 teams participated in the event compared with 12 in January 2011. SAP Labs, Continental, Indo-German Training Centre, Prion, Krones, Lufthansa Technik, Lapp India, Ltd., Robert Bosch Engineering, Robert Bosch Automotive, .Siemens Information Systems Ltd. , Mercedes-Benz Research, Guehring 1, Guehring 2, German Consulate Team , Mixed Team, Nokia Siemens. We were very happy to welcome 2 teams from Guehring India this year which is a first in this event, first time that Guehring participates in the event and the first time any company has entered two teams in the tournament. M. Recai Kipik, the Managing Director of Guehring was present throughout the day to cheer his team.
Each team played 3 matches in the preliminary rounds. After 24 group matches of 20 minutes each on 4 simultaneous fields and with perfect umpiring by 6 referees specially organized for the event by the company Continental, the teams from SAP Labs who were the champions from 2011, Robert Bosch Engineering, Siemens & Continental qualified and sailed into the semi-final.
A separate childrens tournament was organised side by side. Four teams from 4 different schools participated in the childrens tournament. Competition among the children’s teams was high.

Grama – Ajjanahalli was present with their mentors from BREADS (Bangalore Rural Educational & Development Society). DBYGA is a rehabilitation centre for street and working children and is supported by Lufthansa. Gottigere Muncipal school with the support of GW Precision through the Rotary Mid-Town club was there with the team, the school band and the cheer leaders. NAL school coached, mentored and supported by the Main sponsor of the tournament, Prion PLM It Solutions was the fourth team among the children’ s team. The four teams started their matches after a break for lunch. After the first 2 matches the winners Shanti Bhavan team and the NAL School team played the finals. Amidst cheering and support from the spectators, the school children played a hard fought battle and the NAL School team emerged the winners.
In the first semi-final, Siemens beat Continental and in the second semi-final, SAP Labs beat
Robert Bosch Engineering.
The final match of the event was a fiercely fought battle between SAP Labs and Siemens, the arch rivals on the scene. At the end of 20 minutes after many saves and missed chances, SAP Labs emerged as the winner of the tournament with two goals to one.
Dr. Ingo Karsten, the German Consul General, who witnessed the semi-finals and the finals gave away the trophy to the winning team. Medals and prizes were also given
by Mr. Hubert Reilard, Chairman of the German Business Group, Mrs. Audrey Dsouza, Regional Director of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and Dr. George Abraham, Founder of Shanthi Bhavan, Mr. Tosher Hormusjee of GW Precision & Mr. Ehsan Shariff of Prion Group.
The top scorer of the tournament was Sachin from Mercedes Benz who scored 8 goals in 3 matches. The Trophies, medals were sponsored by Globe Moving & Storage Co. Pvt. Ltd., with over 40 years experience in the packers and movers industry and one amongst India’s leading moving companies extending their services to any part of the globe.
Our match Referee, Mr. Uwe Sperber, from the German Business Group ensured that the rules of the games were strictly adhered to and strived to maintain fair play at all times. The entertaining Mr. Chris Pohl, the Managing Director of Ammirato Wines, who was our emcee and announcer for the day entertained the spectators with his lively announcements.
