Germany confers Order of Merit on President of Indo-German Cultural Society

The German Consul General in Bangalore, Dr. Ingo Karsten, conferred the prestigious Bundesverdienstkreuz (Germany’s Order of Merit) on the President of the Indo-German Cultural Society, Mr. Subrato Haldar, in a ceremony held on 24 January, 2012, at his residence.

With this Order of Merit, thePresident of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christian Wulff, acknowledges Mr. Haldar’s long-standing contribution to Indo-German friendship. 

Mr. Haldar dedicated much of his life to bring forward the Indo-German relations. His studies in Mechanical Engineering led him to Germany for the first time.

He has organised many cultural events. Classical concerts, such as with the Chamber Orchestra of Stuttgart, have opened the door to classical music and found much appreciation in Bangalore. The Oktoberfest in Bangalore is now the most famous Oktoberfest in India.

Mr. Haldar and the Indo-German Cultural Society also contributed significantly to the project “Germany and India 2011 – 2012: Infinite Opportunities” to commemorate 60 years of bilateral Indo-German diplomatic relations.

Speaking on the occasion, the German Consul General said, “Mr. Haldar is a true cultural ambassador of Germany in India, a trusted and reliable partner and a very close friend of Germany.”

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany is awarded to German nationals and foreigners for outstanding political and intellectual performances as as well as for eminent cultural or humanitarian merits for Germany.
