The Military Section

The Defence Attaché represents the German Armed Forces in the host country in military, diplomatic and armament/ arms export aspects and counsel the ambassador on these topics. To fulfill its task, the department establishes and maintains connection to the Indian Ministry of Defence as well as to other military authorities of the host country.

Secondly, the defence attaché reports about the host country’s defence policy, military matters and forces and by doing so contributes to the of the Federal German Government’s overall picture on India. A third big portion of the department’s work is the support of delegations that visit the host country.

The defence attaché to India is also responsible for Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Bilateral Defence Cooperation

Indo-German military and strategic relations got a new momentum with the signing of an agreement in 2006 between the German Federal Ministry of Defence and the Indian Ministry of Defence. The agreement envisaged a deeper cooperation regarding security and defence issues.
